Simi Gauba's Pebble Bagasse Collection: A Revolution in Disposable Dining

Winner of the Golden A' Disposable and Single-Use Product Design Award in 2015

In a world increasingly conscious of environmental impact, designer Simi Gauba has created a range of disposable dining products that are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also sustainable. The Pebble Bagasse Collection, inspired by the organic shape of pebbles, is made from bagasse, a by-product of sugarcane, making it biodegradable and compostable.

The Pebble Bagasse Collection is a testament to the power of thoughtful design. Gauba's inspiration came from the humble pebble, leading to a range of products that are as organic in form as they are in composition. The plates and bowls, with their smooth, rounded shapes, are reminiscent of pebbles found in nature, lending an earthy elegance to the dining experience.

What sets the Pebble Bagasse Collection apart is its material - bagasse. This by-product of sugarcane is not only readily available and renewable, but also biodegradable. Unlike traditional plastic or Styrofoam disposable products, bagasse products degrade and return to the soil in just eight weeks, providing natural ingredients back to the environment. This makes the collection an ideal alternative for environmentally conscious consumers.

The process of creating these products is also eco-friendly. Bagasse plates and bowls are formed through a high heat and pressure process, requiring fewer chemicals and less energy than traditional methods. The result is a robust product that can withstand the rigors of use while being gentle on the environment.

The Pebble Bagasse Collection was brought to life with the help of the Consumer Department of Duni AB, with Gauba leading the design from sketch to final product. The collection, which started in Malmö, Sweden in February 2014, was completed by July of the same year. The products are now available in stores and supermarkets across Europe.

Despite the challenges of making bagasse look attractive on the shelf compared to colorful plastic products, Gauba and her team succeeded in creating a product that is not only functional and sustainable, but also visually appealing. The organic form and shape of the Pebble Bagasse Collection is a testament to Gauba's design prowess and commitment to sustainability.

The Pebble Bagasse Collection's innovative design and sustainability earned it the Golden A' Disposable and Single-Use Product Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding creations that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics. Simi Gauba's Pebble Bagasse Collection is indeed a revolution in disposable dining.
